How to pick a college
If you’ve been admitted to more than one university, it may be difficult to decide which one is the best choice. Here are some tips so you can be ready when college decision day rolls around.
Consider which one will help you achieve your goals
It can be helpful to list your goals, both short and long term, academic, personal and professional. Think about what you want to accomplish during college such as studying abroad, getting an internship, achieving independence, making connections, etc. Will the colleges you’re considering help facilitate that? And consider life after college. What kind of career field would you like to enter, and how can the colleges you’re deciding on get you there?
Make a list of pros and cons
Put pencil to paper (or finger to keyboard) and list out the strengths and potential weaknesses for each college choice. Consider factors such as location and distance, cost, environment, academic reputation, safety, support services and degree program options. If you have family members helping you with your decision, you might ask them to make their own pro/con list and then have a follow-up with each other to compare and discuss your lists.
Ask those who know you
Talk to friends, family members, teachers, your guidance counselor and college admission representatives. The people in your life — particularly the ones who know you best — can provide honest and unbiased input from a fresh perspective.
Insider tip: A good university admission counselor or recruiter should help you make the best decision for you by listening and guiding you rather than pushing you to attend their school. Pay attention to how university representatives make you feel. When it comes to making a decision, these conversations shouldn’t sound like sales pitches.
Go with what feels right
Choosing a college takes a lot of time and thought. Even after you've compared your options, made a list of pros and cons, and talked with people you trust, it can still be hard to decide. The fact is, you may not know if a school is the right fit until you get there and experience it for yourself.
If you've done your research and are still deciding between two or more great options, trust your instincts and listen to your gut. It will tell you. And remember, your college decision doesn’t have to be permanent. If you later realize the school isn't the right fit, transferring is always an option.
Good luck!
