What is campus life in college? A realistic guide for incoming students

Campus life in college refers to everything students experience inside and outside the classroom. It includes academics, student organizations, campus events, residence halls, recreation, friendships and the day-to-day responsibilities of college student life. While every student's experience is different, getting involved can make college more rewarding and help you feel connected to your campus community.

What to expect in college
One of the more significant changes to expect in college is greater independence. Unlike in high school, you'll have more flexibility in your schedule and more responsibility for managing your classes, study time, work and social life. Life on a college campus means learning to balance these responsibilities, and this is one of the biggest adjustments for many first-year students.

In college, you can also expect:

  • Smaller or larger classes than in high school, depending on the course
  • More opportunities to meet people
  • Easier access to professors during office hours
  • More flexibility in choosing your classes

How can you get involved outside the classroom?
Getting involved outside the classroom is one of the best ways to experience college campus life, explore your interests or try things you’ve never done before. Student organizations, campus events and volunteer opportunities help students build friendships, develop leadership skills and feel connected to their campus community. A few of the opportunities found on most college campuses include:

You should treat these opportunities like a buffet. Add to your plate the things you know you like, pass on the things you don’t and maybe try something new.

How to make friends in college
Many students worry that they won't make friends in college, but meeting people is a natural part of college student life. The truth is, everyone is concerned about making friends in college. But one of the greatest perks of college campus life is that there are so many places and opportunities to make connections with other students. These include:

  • Classes
  • Residence halls
  • Student clubs
  • Campus jobs
  • Athletic events

And if you don’t find your people immediately, don’t worry. It can take a little time. Just keep putting yourself out there, and you’ll make friends.

How to use campus resources
One of the biggest surprises for most first-year students is how many campus resources and student support services are available to help them succeed academically and personally. It makes sense — the faculty and staff at your college want you to succeed and will go out of their way to help you. Most universities offer some form of these services:

Ask any successful student, and they’ll likely tell you that they’ve used several of these resources at some point in their college experience.

Have fun on campus
One of the best parts of campus life is enjoying yourself after a long day of studying. Universities typically offer an abundance of opportunities to unwind, such as:

Is campus life only for students who live on campus?
No. Commuter students can join clubs, attend campus events, use campus resources and participate in student organizations just like students who live in residence halls. In fact, it’s encouraged because using these resources and taking advantage of these opportunities help commuter students feel more connected to their university.

College campus life is what you make it, and it looks different for everyone

Keep in mind that life on a college campus is different for every student. Some students live on campus while others commute. Some work part time while others don’t. Some are involved in research or internships while others prefer intramurals and student government. There’s no “right” college campus life.

So, what is campus life in college? It's the combination of academics, friendships, campus traditions, student organizations and personal growth that shapes your college experience. Getting involved, using campus resources and staying open to new opportunities can help you make the most of your time as a college student.
