English proficiency for international graduate applicants

An applicant whose native language is not English (regardless of current residency) must provide proof of English proficiency.

Your application will not be processed without valid proof of English proficiency.

Acceptable proof is as follows:

Individual academic units may have higher requirements for English proficiency. Review your degree program of interest for details.

An IELTS, PTE or TOEFL must have been taken no longer than two years prior to the student’s start date at ASU. Applicants who have scores that are more than two years (or will be more than two years by the time of ASU’s start date), may be requested to submit updated test scores or demonstrate English proficiency through one of the other listed options.

Exemption

You could qualify for an exemption from this requirement by one of the following two options:

Global Launch completion

You successfully complete the highest level of the Global Launch Intensive English Program with grades of B or better.

Attendance at a U.S. institution

You have attended in person a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. and meet one of the following conditions:

  • earned a bachelor’s degree or higher in the U.S. (official transcripts required)
  • completed at least 12 credit hours of graduate coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or higher (all credits must be earned in the U.S. and official transcripts must be mailed to ASU)
  • completed at least 90 credit hours of undergraduate coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or higher (all 90 hours must be earned in the U.S. and official transcripts must be mailed to ASU)
