I-20 FAQs

Before you submit documents for issuance of your Form I-20

International students at Arizona State University who need to apply for an F-1 visa must submit ASU’s required I-20 documents before a Form I-20 document can be issued.

Students attending ASU Online and ASU Sync, as well as nondegree-seeking students, are not eligible for a Form I-20 document issued by ASU. Visiting students (students who only take a few classes at ASU with the intent of transferring credits back to their previous institution) are not generally eligible.

Degree-seeking students admitted to ASU’s on-campus programs can have I-20 documents reviewed for issuance of a Form I-20 document after being admitted to their program. It is extremely important to submit ASU’s I-20 required documents as early as possible after being admitted to ensure a Form I-20 document can be issued before the semester of admission.

For I-20 processing timelines and deadlines, a walkthrough of the I-20 process, and I-20 frequently asked questions, see the international student visas webpage.

You can upload the required documents via the I-20 tracker on My ASU. Minimum required I-20 documents include:

  • A completed ASU Financial Guarantee Form.
  • Financial documents showing the required funding for your program for one academic year (nine months) for tuition and fees and living expenses.
  • A copy of your passport photo page.

After all I-20 documents have been received by Admission Services and you have been fully admitted to your program, ASU aims to review your required I-20 documents within seven to 10 business days following receipt.

For I-20 processing timelines and deadlines, a walkthrough of the I-20 process, and I-20 frequently asked questions, see the international student visas webpage.

We strongly recommend that you read the ASU Financial Guarantee Form in its entirety before submitting any documents to ensure that you understand the requirements.

  • A completed ASU Financial Guarantee Form.
  • Financial documents showing the required funding for your program for one academic year (nine months) for tuition and fees and living expenses.

Financial documents show proof of funding and are separate from the ASU Financial Guarantee Form.

All financial documents need to be dated within 12 months from the first day of the semester to which you are admitted. Financial documents should cover the entire amount displayed on the ASU Financial Guarantee Form for the first nine months of your program.

We are unable to use summer funding for I-20 processing purposes. Amounts are not negotiable and funds may only be applied as designated. If TA or RA offers do not cover the full costs indicated on the ASU Financial Guarantee Form for your program, please make sure that additional funding support documentation is also submitted.

Your financial documents must show at least the USD equivalent of the funding required for your program for one academic year (nine months) for tuition and fees and living expenses, listed in Section 2 of the ASU Financial Guarantee Form

We cannot issue a Form I-20 document where insufficient funding is demonstrated, which will result in a delay of your I-20 issuance.

Please ensure your financial documents show sufficient funding before submitting documents.

Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your proposed date of entry into the U.S. If it is not valid, the Form I-20 document will not be issued until a valid passport that meets the six-month requirement is provided to Admission Services.

Note: If you are already in the U.S. and eligible for a SEVIS I-20 transfer and are not leaving the U.S. before starting at ASU, the six-month requirement does not pertain to you. You will be required to renew your passport when you go back home and before reentering the U.S. again.

Once you have received your Form I-20 document, do not delay in booking your visa appointment. We recommend you check wait times for your local embassy or consulate, as some areas may be experiencing wait times longer than 30 days.

You should submit ASU’s required I-20 documents as soon as possible to ensure you allow plenty of time to apply for your F-1 visa.

I-20 process

Please check the dates when we begin I-20 processing for your semester of admission and deadlines for I-20 issuance. For I-20 processing timelines and deadlines, a walkthrough of the I-20 process, and I-20 frequently asked questions, see the international student visas webpage.

ASU aims to review your required I-20 documents within seven to 10 business days following receipt of all the required documents, and when documents are submitted on or after the processing start date through processing deadlines.

If you submit your documents before we begin processing I-20s for your semester of admission, please be aware that you may not receive your Form I-20 document until after that date.

Once ASU has received all I-20 documents required to issue a Form I-20 document and has verified that they are complete, you will receive an email with a link to download your Form I-20 document from the Document Portal on My ASU. Once received, you should print and sign the Form I-20 document. You will not receive a physical Form I-20 document via mail. The email will be sent to your @asu.edu email address. As a reminder, your @asu.edu email address is being forwarded to your personal email account, so be sure to check it often, including junk and spam folders, so you do not miss any messages.

For instructions on how to navigate your Document Portal, please visit the ISSC receiving documents webpage or watch the MyISSC Document Portal video

Example of Document Portal:

Please check your junk mail folder as some email services may filter ASU emails. Emails sent to your ASU email address are forwarded to the email address you used when you activated your ASURITE User ID.

After receiving your Form I-20 document

  • Undergraduate students — All undergraduate students should arrive and be checked in by the first day of classes. ASU does not accept late arrivals after the first day of classes. Immediately contact asuinternational@asu.edu if you cannot arrive by the first day of classes to let Admission Services know of your situation and discuss possibly deferring your admission to the next semester. Find more information on undergraduate deferment.
  • Graduate students — Please contact the ASU department your program is in to discuss your options. Contact information is located in your ASU admission letter and on My ASU.

The program name on your Form I-20 document does not provide the exact name of your program of study. Instead, your Form I-20 document includes a CIP Codes category for your program of study. CIP Codes contain similar programs that are grouped together.

  1. Print your Form I-20 document and other relevant documents. Then, sign your Form I-20 document. Note: You will not receive a physical Form I-20 document via mail.
  2. Pay your I-901 fee. Once the fee has been paid, do not delay in contacting your consulate to obtain a visa appointment, as some consulates may have long wait times.

SEVIS transfer applicants

If your ASU program begins within the five month grace period following the end of your previous program, you may be eligible to transfer your SEVIS record to ASU. We recommend that you contact a designated school official from the school you are transferring from to confirm that your SEVIS record is eligible to be transferred.

Please be aware that ASU does not accept complete, canceled or terminated SEVIS records.

If you are eligible for a SEVIS transfer, please ensure you fill out Section 4 on the ASU Financial Guarantee Form with all the information requested regarding your current SEVIS record. It is important that you speak with your DSO from the school you are transferring from to obtain the record release date, your last date of attendance and the DSO’s contact information before you submit your ASU Financial Guarantee Form

  • Current SEVIS ID
  • U.S. address
  • Last date of attendance at the school you are transferring from

If you cannot get the final sponsor letter approved and sent to ASU, you may submit personal or family funds to cover the first-year funding amount. This will enable ASU to issue your Form I-20 document for your visa appointment. You and your sponsor can later work with ISSC and Student Business Services to update billing information so the sponsor can cover the costs. For more details, refer to the sponsor billing and sponsored students webpages.
