A program of professional preparation must be proposed and operated by an entity that makes all personnel decisions regarding the employment, retention or promotion of employees without unlawful discrimination.
The entity must make all decisions regarding the admission, retention and graduation of students without unlawful discrimination. | (a) Provide a draft or copy of the institution’s policies governing personnel decisions including employment, retention and promotion (e.g., employee handbook, recruiting materials or other published personnel materials) that include reference to an unlawful discrimination policy.

(b) Provide a draft or copy of the institution’s policies related to candidate admissions, retention and graduation (e.g., candidate handbook, website or other materials) that include reference to an unlawful discrimination policy. | Arizona State University’s Academic Affairs Manual provides our institution’s policies governing personnel decisions including employment, retention, promotion and unlawful discrimination. In the manual there are sections that explain the protocol for search committees for hiring new faculty (ACD 111–01), the hiring process and verification of backgrounds for all finalists being hired (ACD 126), the responsibilities of a faculty member (ACD 202–01), academic professionals responsibilities (ACD 202–02), faculty and academic professional code of ethics (ACD 204–01), the Board of Regents’ view of professional conduct (ACD 204–02), university preamble for promotion and tenure (ACD 506–01), evaluation for tenure (ACD 506–04), faculty promotion (ACD 506–05), annual evaluations of faculty (ACD 506–10), renewal and notification of nonrenewal for academic professionals with year-to-year appointments (ACD 507–03), how faculty and academic professionals can participate in the performance evaluation of administrators (ACD 111–03), and the university's policy on discrimination, harassment and retaliation (ACD 401).
Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation (MLFC) maintains a website where all full- and part-time jobs are posted: https://education.asu.edu/about/jobs. The site provides a statement about Arizona State University being an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and provides a link to ACD 401: Prohibition Against Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation policy and a link to ASU’s University Office of Human Resources.
MLFC maintains a site for faculty called My Education Hub. The Academic Personnel Processes page provides an overview of college-level administration of policy and procedures affecting academic personnel. MLFC’s Standards of Academe (SoAs) represent the college’s policies and procedures for recommendations regarding continued probation, promotion, tenure, sabbatical proposals and annual performance evaluations while serving both formative and summative purposes. Additionally on the My Education Hub, there is a page for “new hires,” so they can find information and resources to help them get started as a new faculty member.
To provide personalized support and answer questions about any of the processes for annual review and promotion, our associate dean for scholarly advancement and our associate director fiscal and business operations sponsor annual meetings for the MLFC faculty. |
Candidate Admissions To apply for admission, applicants go to the Apply to graduate school website. The site provides the steps, requirements for admission and application deadlines. Once the applicant has provided all the required information, prior to paying their application fee, they are asked to acknowledge their understanding of the following: - They are responsible for submitting all official transcripts from prior institutions. - Their application affirms their willingness to educate and comport themselves within the ASU Academic Integrity and Responsible Conduct of Research policies. - ASU does not discriminate on the basis of sex in the education programs and activities we operate, including in admission and employment. The Title IX coordinator's contact information is provided.
The MLFC graduate students website provides an example of how MLFC provides candidates information on the college’s mission, the programs offered, how to access the Student Success Team and financial support. The application requirements for our current programs are also housed on the site. The site also provides students information on what to do once they are admitted. If at any time students need assistance, there is a link to provide them access to their graduate admission team member. If approved by the California Commission, this site will include all of the above for our California program(s). Here is a draft of a program handbook.
Our proposed program is for those who have a bachelor’s degree and want to earn their California teaching credential. Because these students will have a bachelor’s degree, they are considered graduate students at Arizona State University (ASU). All ASU graduate students are required to complete and submit a plan of study online through the My ASU interactive Plan of Study (iPOS). The iPOS must be submitted and approved prior to completing 50% of the coursework required for the program. The iPOS helps with program integrity because it preloads the students’ program requirements, so they know what specific courses to take and this allows the students, staff and faculty to map out the students’ graduate program requirements and track their progress. Once students advance to the final semester of their program of study, information about how to apply for graduation appears in My ASU. The graduation deadlines and procedures are set by the Graduate College and are available online at graduation deadlines. The graduation requirements are also posted in the Graduate College Policy Manual.
The Office of Academic and Career Success (OACiS) at MLFC provides a comprehensive suite of integrated, multi-domain services that are designed to foster whole-person success. MLFC students have access to an academic coach, a career development coach, a financial coach, a wellness coach, and a care coordinator who connects students to the appropriate support resources for their unique needs and helps them develop plans to move forward.
OACiS also maintains a Supporting Our Students (SOS) referral site where faculty, staff, community members and students can refer a student or themselves for support. These SOS submissions are managed by the student success director, and the referrals are directed to the appropriate member of the Care Team. Faculty and staff are provided at the beginning of each semester and reminders throughout the semester of the Students in Distress Protocol.
The MLFC Satisfactory Academic Progress and Professional Conduct Policy (SAPPC) outlines the standards and expectations for "satisfactory academic progress" and "good standing" and explains the consequences of failure to meet these standards. The SAPPC also outlines on page 3 how graduate students (those enrolled in our proposed program) should carefully review and adhere to ASU Graduate College policies.
Faculty are required to submit Academic Status Reports (ASR) throughout the semester on their students. The ASRs are a part of an early alert reporting system designed to give students helpful updates throughout the semester. The ASR website provides students with information on what an ASR is and what they should do if they receive one. The ASR site also includes student resources for academic support, health and wellness support, student advocacy assistance, and support for international students and scholars.
The Mary Lou Fulton College Policies page provides information on academic integrity, the notice of nondiscrimination, and the satisfactory academic progress and professional conduct policy.
The MLFC Graduate Student Site is a resource provided to students, and the site is maintained by our graduate advising team. The site provides students with new student checklists based upon their program, information on the teacher certification requirements, links to contact the advising team, program descriptions and policy information with links to the program handbooks for our current programs, and course sequences so students know their program of study and the courses to sign up for each semester. If approved by the California Commission, this site would include all of the resources above for our California program(s). |
